When ChatGPT went dark in early December 2025, it was not just a minor glitch on a popular chatbot. It was a direct hit on hundreds of AI service startups that quietly run their core products on the same infrastructure.

OpenAI’s own status page recorded “significant downtime” across ChatGPT, the API and even Sora, triggered by a telemetry deployment that overwhelmed its Kubernetes systems, before a separate incident tied to a routing misconfiguration led to another round of failures according to the official incident report. Downdetector logged tens of thousands of user complaints, while outlets like TechRadar and the Economic Times tracked the spike in outage reports in real time.

How the ChatGPT outage rippled through AI startups

For everyday users, the outage showed up as blank screens, disappearing chats and 500 errors. For AI-first startups, it looked like their entire product collapsing at once.

Many early stage companies have built full products on top of the ChatGPT API. They offer tools for marketing copy, customer support, code reviews, research helpers and more. When the December outages hit, every “generate” button that depended on OpenAI simply stopped responding. The outages did not just cause headaches. They raised uncomfortable questions about how AI infrastructure is being built and who carries the risk.

OpenAI has been open about the pressure. CEO Sam Altman declared a company wide “code red” to improve ChatGPT’s speed and reliability, delaying other products to focus on stability, according to multiple reports, including TechRadar’s breakdown of the memo and follow-up coverage from Town & Country Today and MacRumors. At the same time, OpenAI has asked policymakers to consider federal support for AI infrastructure. Brookings noted that a McKinsey report projects more than 5.2 trillion dollars in AI datacenter spending by 2030, a number that shows how much capital is now tied to keeping services like ChatGPT running.

The stack itself is complex and sometimes brittle. The December incidents came shortly after a Mixpanel security issue, where an attacker accessed analytics data that included some OpenAI telemetry. Mixpanel and OpenAI both published breakdowns of the event and remediation steps. While no prompt or response content was exposed, the chain of dependencies is long, and each extra component widens the blast radius if something goes wrong.

And it nudged the whole ecosystem toward a more mature phase, where infrastructure questions move from the footnotes of pitch decks into the opening slide.

The lesson is not that founders should avoid OpenAI or any single provider. It is that critical systems deserve the same kind of redundancy, observability and planning that we already expect from payments or cloud storage. The December ChatGPT outage made that painfully clear. The next generation of AI startups will likely be judged not only by how smart their models feel, but by how well they keep working when something upstream breaks.
